Another chilly start to a long day. We walk briskly through the morning sunrise and are soon well into the 27km of our day. We pass through some ancient lands and through the place where the prehistoric caves of Atapuerca were discovered. Human remains over 900000 years old were discovered here – it makes me feel very young.

A short but steep climb past a herd of sheep waking up for the morning, leads us onto an open field with a large cross and onto an option in the path – we chose the road less travelled, hoping for a place to stop for breakfast. No luck. We soon rejoin the main path and run into our new friends from California, have a quick, but disappointing, breakfast and head on our way again to Burgos.

Some how we miss the turn off for the scenic route to Burgos and end up in the less picturesque industrial area outside town. We had to find our way back to the track, but this added some time to our walk. The reward of retracing our route is spectacular, as we wander the last 11km along the beautiful rio Arianzon into the surprisingly beautiful Burgos.

Part of our lovely walk.

I was amazed at how friendly the locals were- always ready to give directions and offer encouragement. Buen Camino was a common greeting all the way into town. It lifted our flagging spirits. Thank you people of Burgos.
