A nice easy stroll through the streets of Pamplona took us past the university and soon into the countryside again. We walked through the stunning yellow fields of canola. It was so beautiful in the early morning light.

It is not long that we are confronted with our major challenge for the the day – Alto del Pedron. As we rise above the plain and fields of canola, we are greeted by rain, so it it is a quick change into our rain gear for the rest of the climb up the hill. Upon reaching the top the rain is gone and the sun is out again.

The yellow canola fields brightened the day

Climbing the hills can be difficult but it is part of what this Camino is all about. Setting oneself a goal is very important. It gives a focus and sense of accomplishment. I felt it was also important to look back at what was achieved and the reward of the beautiful views that we had just walked through made the satisfaction even sweeter. Whilst the past was now behind, it still holds important messages.

At the top of the climb, not only were we rewarded with sun and satisfaction of meeting the challenge, nature also provided us with the majestic sight of 5 of the local vultures cruising along the ridge – hopefully not looking for some unfortunate pilgrim. Also on top of the ridge were steel figures of the first pilgrims with St James, head bent as they meet the westerly winds – a real reminder of why people take on the Camino.

A relatively easy descent and steady walk saw us reach our destination of Puente la Reina early in the afternoon.
